DENR holds caravan to save Mother Earth

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Central Visayas kicked off its 18-day Earth Day People's Caravan in Negros Oriental as it gears for a healthy environment to save Mother Earth.

In a Kapihan sa Philippine Information Agency (PIA), DENR Regional Technical Director Dioscoro Melana said the caravan which started last Saturday will encourage the people to think green and to protect and care for the environment.

"There is an urgent need to raise the level of awareness on environmental degradation and destruction which threaten all life forms on earth and the life of many Filipinos," Melana said.

The activity was conducted in celebration with the Philippine Earth Day on April 22.

This year's theme is "Tubig ay Buhay, Ating Pagyamanin at Linisin.

Antonio Cabrido, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (Penro) said the caravan route starts from Bayawan City, down to Dumaguete City and then to Ayungon, Negros Oriental to San Carlos City in Negros Occidental.

Last Saturday, before the caravan proceeded to Bayawan city, land titles were distributed to farmer-beneficiaries during an environmental program.

From San Carlos City, the caravan will proceed to the provinces of Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor before it will be turned over to DENR Western Visayas. (VLC)
