Tuesday, April 08, 2008 Penro: Protect remaining forest in Negros Oriental
PROVINCIAL Environment Natural Resources (Penro) Officer Antonio Cabrido said some rivers have dried up while others showed a drop of water level, an apparent manifestation of the lack of trees in the forest.
Cabrido said base on their survey some rivers showed a disheartening drop in water level during summer season while other rivers has no water at all because of the disappearance of trees that act as watersheds in the hinterland areas.
The province has only four percent of forest. It needs another 45 percent to ensure enough water supply in the province, he said.
He urged residents to protect the forest and rivers for the future generation.
Penro and DENR, with its caravan program, will help push the level of awareness in protecting the rivers by not dumping human waste, garbage and other waste materials that contaminate waters.
"Water is life, we must protect and clean it up" Cabrido said. (SGR)
