Wednesday, April 09, 2008 Man charged with rape commits suicide inside jail
A 40-YEAR-old man accused of rape committed suicide inside the Dumaguete City detention cell at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Joel Galon cut his right wrist using a blade, police said.
PO3 Alfer Estoras said Galon was found lying inside his cell with a bed sheet covering him. When one of the inmates found blood coming from Galon, he immediately called for the police on duty.
Police rushed Galon to Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital for medical treatment.
Police said Galon was arrested Tuesday last week when his stepdaughter accused him of rape.
The abuses, she told police, started since she was still in kindergarten and continued up to the present. She is now a second year high school student.
The 14-year-old victim, whose name is being withheld by Sun.Star, claimed her stepfather abused her several times.
The relatives of the victim filed rape charges against the suspect. (SGR)
