1,200 City Hall workers to get 10% wage hike in July

THE more than 1,200 employees of the local government of Dumaguete City will get 10 percent increase of their monthly salary starting July 2008.

City Administrator Dominador Dumalag Jr. told Sun.Star that the city budget office has readied the fund for the increase of more than 800 regular workers and 400 casual workers.

Dumalag admitted that the 10 percent increase will not answer the real needs but at least could help.

He stressed that the high prices of basic commodities has greatly affected the consuming public.

With this, he said, Mayor Agustin Perdices has called an emergency meeting Monday to study the possible increase of City Hall workers.

The city budget officer has asked to prepare the possible budget for 10 percent increase.

Dumalag also said the city treasurer testified the availability of fund.

Mayor Perdices is set to sign the proposal on or before Labor Day, May 1.

Workers on job order basis however are not included, said Dumalag. He explained that workers on job order basis are project paid.

For his part, City councilor Esperidion Catan, chairman of the committee in human resource of the City Council, said he will support the mayor's proposal.

But for him, a 10 percent increase is not just enough on what the workers' need but he stressed that local government units usually depend on guidelines given by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) approved by the President. (VLC)
