Both the Provincial School Board and the Provincial Board headed by Vice Governor Jose "Petit" Baldado gave the go signal for the governor to acquire a loan with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) for the construction of 104 school buildings in its initial phase.

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Negros Oriental, headed by division superintendent Licerio Napao, submitted a listing of the school buildings to be constructed in every municipality during the meeting with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Negros Oriental chapter.

In that meeting, it was also proposed that local government units take part in the project under a possible cost-sharing scheme.

Napao said this is a joint project of the provincial government and the DepEd headed by Secretary Jesli Lapus.

Under the agreement, DepEd will provide for one teacher each for every classroom built by the Provincial Government.

According to Napao, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approved the project and extended her full support.

The school building project intends to address the need for additional classrooms due to the expected rise in enrolment in the public schools this school year.

Earlier, Governor Macias told the league that each Provincial Board Member shall be tasked to build one school building with two classrooms using their funds. (EBS)
