Saturday, July 05, 2008 NegOr holds Basketball on Wheels ‘08
THE 2nd Negros Oriental Open Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will prove once again that the field of sports does not recognize weaknesses, but only strengths even in persons with disabilities.
To be held on July 18 to 20, the competition will feature differently-abled players from Misamis Occidental, Iligan City, Cagayan de Oro City, Quezon City and, most notably, the National Wheelchair Basketball Team in Manila.
This event, which is sponsored by The Great Physician Rehabilitation Foundation (GPRehab), the local government units of Negros Oriental and Dumaguete City, Globelines, and the Institute of Youth Sports for Peace-Foundation University, will be held in different venues.
July 18 -- Sibulan Quadrangle, 3-7 p.m.;
July 19 -- Foundation University Gym, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
July 20 -- Dumaguete City Hall Quadrangle, 8-10 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.
In order to educate local persons with disabilities, sports buffs, referees, and students on the mechanics of wheelchair basketball, Noel Ascue, Secretary General of the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently-Abled (Philspada) will give a lecture-seminar on July 18 on Strategies in Wheelchair Basketball at the Sibulan Quadrangle in Sibulan.
While Dr. Raul Michael Cembrano, also of Philspada, will also demonstrate the particularities of the Classification Program, a unique feature of differently-abled sports, to ensure that persons with disabilities will have an equal footing in the games.
This activity is part of the local celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week from July 17-23 with the theme “Kapag May Access, May Success.” (EBS)
