Friday, August 08, 2008 Gawad Kalinga to build houses for 65 poor families
ALMOST a hundred poor families will soon acquire their own houses in a 1.6 hectares lot at Barangay Talay, Dumaguete City under the Gawad Kalinga (GK).
Carlo Borromeo, who heads the GK project in Negros Oriental, said Pastor family donated a lot in the same barangay for GK Village development to build house for the homeless that incorporates a productivity area for vegetable farming and tilapia raising.
Borromeo added that the GK Village will also establish some facilities such as basketball court, Day Care school, playground, a health clinic, a guest house for the family-beneficiaries.
He said 27 Japanese students led by their Professor Nobuhiro Imaizumi have recently started to build two houses with the assistance by skilled workers and volunteers from Couples for Christ, Singles for Christ, Habitat for Humanity and barangay officials in Talay.
The students have pooled their resources for the materials of the houses.
The GK aims to rebuild the country by restoring the dignity of the poor and empowering them to become, once again, productive citizens of the society.
GK is one of the pillars of Couples of Christ aimed to fulfill the community's mission to "bring glad tidings to the poor."
Borromeo said the public and other organizations are invited to participate in nation-building through GK in whatever form or capacity. (EBS)
