Sunday, August 24, 2008 Capitol allots P62M for school building construction
CAPITOL legislators have appropriated around P62 million for the province's school building program, which is initiated by Governor Emilio C. Macias II with the tagline "Basta NegOr, Educ 104."
They have also given Governor Macias an authority to enter into a loan package agreement with the government-owned Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).
DBP was chosen due to its schedule of benefits and payments scheme, which the province finds agreeable.
The school building program is implemented in coordination with the local government units (LGUs) and the Department of Education (DepEd). It was started in two pilot areas, first in Cambonbon Elementary School in Barangay Sandulot, Siaton town and Arapiles High School in Tanjay City.
Capitol information officer Adrian Sedillo said the governor handpicked the pilot areas, where two-classroom school buildings now stand, to serve as the program's model "units."
The initial implementation of the program sourced its funds from the school board.
Macias's school building program used the "counterparting" scheme between the LGUs and the Provincial Government.
The construction of each two-classroom school building is pegged at P1.2 million, said Sedillo.
The mayors, meantime, identified the schools to benefit from the said program.
"This is because Governor Macias believes the mayors know best which schools in their areas lack classrooms," said Sedillo. (EBS)
