Village-based solid waste management program pushed

SIBULAN Mayor Tony Renacia pushes the implementation of a barangay-based solid waste management program starting next year.

Renacia, addressing the village heads in one gathering, underscored the important role and responsibility of the barangays under the program.

Under Republic Act (RA) 2003, the barangay is mandated to handle the implementation of the solid waste management in the local government units (LGUs).

Sibulan information officer Rosario Rosales said the government plans to turn over the collection of garbage fees to the respective barangays.

Once this happens, Rosales said the town will be the first in the country to entrust its waste collection fee to the barangays.

Sibulan's Barangay Poblacion is being eyed as the pilot area for the project's implementation next year.

However, other barangay captains have signified their readiness to implement the program.

The barangay captains recently attended a forum aimed to formulate a scheme, system or strategies for the program's effective implementation.

The Municipal Government is working out the forging of a memorandum of agreement with the barangays, which Rosales said, still has to be set. (EBS)
