No more f'crackers on Christmas -- mayor
There will be fairs but no firecrackers in General Santos this Christmas, said Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. Wednesday.
Acharon said he is not trying to copy Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte but during these uncertain times, the city mayor insist it is most prudent to ban firecrackers in the light of continuing bomb threats.
"I know some businessmen will be disappointed by my decision," Acharon began to explain.
He said he already ordered acting city police director Senior Supt. Jorge Aquisap to strictly impose the firecracker ban.
Last year, Mayor Duterte imposed a total ban on firecrackers in Davao City.
The move was met with mixed reactions but most Davao residents welcomed the ban.
Acharon said Cotabato City Mayor Muslimin Sema is also imposing a similar ban this year leaving him with no option but to also implement it here as he anticipates the city will be flooded with firecrackers.
Acharon however said he would only allow pyrotechnics such as luces and fountains.
"Kadtong mga walay lisenysa dili gyud puede mobaligya," the city mayor also added. (Those who do not have licenses will not be allowed to sell.)
Acharon said he also gave Aquisap instructions to bring water during their crackdown operations so that nobody can make use of the seized firecrackers anymore.
"Para malikayan kadtong istorya sa una nga gigamit sa mga pulis ang mga nakuha," he further explained. (This is to avoid speculations that the police are the ones who will use them during the Christmas season.)
But in exchange, the city mayor said the City Government would hold a season-long Paskuhan ng Bayan at the Oval Plaza.
He added that the fair would have the usual bargain bazaar and amusement centers. |
