Elite troops to beef up city's defense

A CONTINGENT from the elite Anti-crime Task Force (Actaf) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines arrived in the city Tuesday to augment military personnel assigned at the Joint Task Force Gensan (JTFG).

Headed by Lt. Geraldo Mojica of the Philippine Navy, the platoon will also help train JTFG members in anti-kidnapping, anti-hijacking as well as anti-terrorist operations.

The elite force was sent here in response to the request of city officials and the military who asked Southern Command chief Lt. Gen. Narciso Abaya to send additional troops here after the 3rd Marine Battalion Landing team was pulled out from the city in October.

"We are grateful to Col. Yano and Col. Ochoa for bringing this matter to the (military) higher ups," General Santos Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. said before the welcome ceremony started.

The city mayor added that the elite AFP contingent would be a welcome relief for residents here who have grown wary of continuing terrorist threats in the city.

Actaf members, who arrived at the Philippine Air force Flying School Command in Buayan, General Santos, used to be under Yano when the latter was still chief of Task Force Zamboanga.

They are veterans of the foiled MNLF rebellion in the Kabatangan war in Zamboanga City in November last year.

They replaced the 2nd Division Reconnaissance Company under Lt. Jose Isiderio, who was given a new assignment.

Actaf is an elite military group composed of personnel from the special forces of the different units of the AFP.
