Acharon attends 2-day conference

MAYOR Pedro Acharon Jr. left over the weekend for Manila to attend the two-day International Conference on Safer Cities: Responding to Urban Insecurity, Crime and Violence held on April 21 and 22 at the Manila Hotel.

No less than President Arroyo was the keynote speaker in the event.

Discussed during the conference, among others, were the social, political and economic costs of global trends in urban insecurity and crime and violence.

The conference also tackled public safety plans of urban cities prone to terrorism and the role of the police, legislature and judiciary in preventing crime and violence.

Speakers in the two-day affair were Paulo Merquita of the Center for the Study of Violence in Sao Paolo, Brazil; Dr. David Driskell of Cornell University; and Mayor Joe Kotonya Aketch of Nairobi, Kenya.

Others who speakers in the conference were Chief Justice Hilario Davide, Sen. Robert Barbers, PNP Chief Hermogenes Ebdane, NBI Director Reynaldo Wycoco, and Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte.

Participants in the conference were city mayors, city chiefs of police, and police regional directors. (PIO/Peping Aponesto)
