NIA tells farmers: Just be patient

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) office in General Santos has appealed to farmers to be patient as repairs are still being done in the city's irrigation system.

NIA assistant irrigation supervisor Gina Lozano issued this advisory after they received numerous complaints from farmers who complained over the closure of the water supply.

"Wala naman kaming magagawa dahil kasalukuyan pang ginagawa ang rehabilitation sa ating irrigation system," Lozano said. (We cannot do anything because our irrigation system is currently undergoing rehabilitation.)

Lozano said NIA is now on the finishing stage of its rehabilitation project in the Tinagacan area.

The closure of the NIA's water supply system, she added, was sanctioned by the City Council.

The rehabilitation work is reportedly aimed at giving ample time for farmlands to recover from the recent crop season.

It will also give more time for harmful pests to die naturally.

Barangays affected by the closure are San Isidro, Lagao, Baluan and Katangawan.

Lozano, however, clarified that they are still supplying water to these areas although on a limited basis while repairs are ongoing.

The rehabilitation works reportedly cost P5 million which was taken from the city's food security program.

"Actually, LGUs are the ones in-charge in the rehabilitation of NIA canals while ours is the maintenance," Lozano also explained. Merlyn F. Velarde
