City braces for protest moves during Bush visit
THE General Santos City Police Office (GSCPO) has started to raise its alert status as the visit of US President George W. Bush nears.
GSCPO director Jeorge Aquisap said they are going to monitor the activities of all militant and progressive groups in the city who are reportedly planning to hold protest actions while the US president is still in the country.
"Ngayong October, tiyak magkakaroon ng mass action kaya tinitingnan natin itong grupong ito, lalo na ang organic of CPP/NPA," said Aquisap. (Definitely, there will be mass actions this October. That is why we are monitoring these groups, especially organic members of the CPP-NPA.)
Although Aquisap assured that the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) is not operating in the city, he said the arrival of Bush could trigger an influx of communist cadres here.
"These people are opposed to the US policy on war and aggression and globalization kaya malamang gagawa ang CPP ng malawakang pagpupulong para sa (and it is likely that the CPP would hold massive meetings for the) protest action," he said.
The CPP and its military wing, the NPA, have been waging guerrilla warfare against the government for over 34 years now.
Police and military sources said the communist-led rebel movement has steadily recovered from its debacles in the early '90s and are beginning to show that they are still a force to reckon with. MFV
