City eyes Marikina, Naga as models in waste management
LOCAL officials said they would make the waste management systems of Marikina and Naga as models for a proposed comprehensive waste management program for General Santos.
Vice Mayor Florentina Congson said they are now evaluating the waste management systems of the two cities, which have attained recognition as among the cleanest and greenest cities in the country over the last few years.
In fact, Congson and several city councilors visited Naga City just a couple of weeks ago.
They also went to Marikina and Tarlac to observe the waste management program of the said areas.
"We intend to come up with a waste management program that would complement the area's economic and development initiatives as experienced by the two cities," she said.
The vice mayor said they were impressed by the effective waste recovery and segregation system focused on the household level in Marikina.
Marikina was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Search for the Cleanest and Greenest Municipality in the National and Capital Region for its successful waste management program that began almost ten years ago.
She said they would immediately come up with a report on the results of their study tour and submit them to the city mayor for appropriate action.
Congson said it is time for the city to draw up a waste management plan to address the growing garbage problem in the city.
