Massive info drive on HIV-Aids sought
A MASSIVE information and education campaign is the only way the government can help control the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (Aids), in the city.
Dr. Mely Lastimoso, head of the social hygiene of the City Integrated Health Services (CIHS) office, said from only four in 1997, the city recorded already seven cases of HIV carriers.
Of the said number allegedly two patients have already died.
Lastimoso declined to reveal the identity the victims but said the older victim, who is a professional, died due to full blown Aids while the second victim, a 10-year old child, also died of complications due to the Aids virus.
The doctor said health officials cannot control the spread of the incurable disease but can only minimize it through an educational campaign.
Lastimoso said they cannot easily identify the HIV carriers because her office only conducts testing and their surveillance system is limited to those who are high-risk groups. MFV
