Ampatuan tops Koronadal dual slalom
KORONADAL CITY -- Early favorite Datu Radin Ampatuan of Cotabato City lived up to his billing by ruling the dual slalom event in the Explore Koronadal Mountain Bike Challenge last Saturday at the Esember Estate.
The 25-year old Ampatuan, president of the Cotabato All-Terrain Bikers Association, beat 30 other daredevil riders in the 300-meter race to pocket P5,000 plus a trophy and medal from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
He was followed by Rey Tocayo of JK-Bicycle of Tacurong City in second place and 14-year-old Edmar Palaca of Gulf-General Santos City in third.
Palaca later ruled the Hardtail category in the Downhill competition held on the same day.
JK's Mitchell Ian Beatriz, 21, finished second followed by Joevic Canja of Ace Koronadal and Aaron Navarro of Panabo City as third and fourth, respectively.
Catba's Carlo Songcayanon, 25, shared the limelight by winning the Full Suspension category. Ampatuan settled for second place followed by teammates Caezar Paredes and Zary Bebanco in that order.
The 28-kilometer cross-country race was still being held as of press time.
The bikers were welcomed by Mayor Miguel Fernando, Councilor Edwin Abris and South Cotabato Mountain Bikers Adventure Club (Scombac) president Mark Mariviles.
"It's a good tune-up for the coming 3rd Mindanao Games in Mati," said PSC Socsargen coordinator Lito delos Reyes who represented PSC Commissioner Leon "Binggoy" Montemayor.
