Sayyaf admits role in Zambo blast
By Edwin G. Espejo

AN ALLEGED member of the Abu Sayyaf Group who is now under the custody of government authorities reportedly admitted participation in a deadly blast that killed an American soldier in Zamboanga City last year.

An credible source said a certain Edzmar Juaini Hayudini allegedly told government interrogators that he was part of the Abu Sayyaf Group that planted a bomb just outside an arms depot in Zamboanga City.

Sergeant Mark Jackson, a US serviceman who participated in the Balikatan exercises then being held in Basilan, and three other Filipinos were killed in the said attack in October last year.

Twenty others, including another US soldier, were also seriously wounded in the blast.

It was not immediately known when and where Hayudini was arrested, but sources said he is allegedly being held by the Presidential Anti-Crime Emergency Response (Pacer), an elite government unit created by President Arroyo tasked to run after organized crime group.

The source, who disclosed the report of Hayudini's arrest, also declined to reveal where the suspect is now being held.

The same source, however, said police and military authorities are still interrogating the suspect.

Hayudini was scheduled to be presented to the media late Thursday afternoon.

Police and military officials said they are not aware of Hayudini in Region 12.

But last Monday, Southern Command chief Lt. Gen. Roy Kyamko announced they captured a certain Yusop Tadah in General Santos.

Tadah, who was shot on the leg when he tried to flee from his captors, is reportedly a close ally of top Abu Sayyaf leader Nadzmie Sabdullah, alias Kumander Global.

Global was captured in Barangay Calumpang last year, just months after they tried but failed to abduct tourists vacationing at a posh beach resort in Samal Island.
