SoCot to fund water treatment, purifying plant
KORONADAL CITY -- The South Cotabato Provincial Government plans to tie up with a local water utility company for the proposed establishment of a modern water treatment and purifying plant here.
South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Avance-Fuentes said they are now studying the possibility of extending a P5-million financial assistance to the Koronadal Water District (KWD) for the immediate acquisition of new equipment that would help improve the quality of potable water in the area.
"We deemed it really necessary to address this need now because the poor quality of our water here is already becoming a big problem for everybody," the governor said.
Fuentes said the proposed new water treatment and purifying facility is particularly needed to free the water distributed by KWD to more than 3,000 concessionaires in the city of possible harmful microorganisms and yellowish particles known locally as "tina (dye)".
KWD explained that the yellowish particles does not pose health risks to humans but its presence in the water has caused damage by turning clothing and other household wares frequently exposed to it yellowish.
She cited they actually received numerous complaints from employees of several regional offices that have transferred in the city.
"The new equipment that are being sought by KWD could help remove these yellowish particles," Fuentes said.
The governor said KWD already submitted a proposal for the financial assistance that would be extended by the provincial government as a soft loan.
She said KWD sought the province's assistance considering the urgency of the need and the stringent requirements if they would acquire a loan through commercial banks.
Describing KWD's need as a "public interest", Fuentes said the provincial government's development and finance committee is considering a six percent interest for the loan.
She said they would still discuss the terms of the loan through an evaluation of KWD's capability.
"We are studying the details of their proposal and determine if we are in a position to say yes by January. But considering its impact to the community, this proposal is really valid and very workable," the governor said. AVE
