Urban poor chides city gov't By Allen S. Terencio
URBAN poor belonging to the Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay)-Gensan Chapter criticized the City Government for its failure to provide a decent housing program for around 30,000 families in the city.
A people's summit, attended by representatives of urban poor from different chapters of Kadamay and other urban poor associations in the city was held Monday in Barangay Dadiangas Heights.
"Among gihimo kining people's summit aron magkahiusa ang mga kabus sa lungsod nga iduso ngadto sa gobyerno ang pagpatuman sa desenteng pabalay, trabaho ug maayong serbisyo-sosyal (We are holding this people's summit to unify urban poor in urging the government to implement a decent housing program, jobs, and better social services)," Kadamay-Gensan Chair Totong Altares said.
In a unity statement read after the summit, the group said: "Humigit kumulang na 30,000 ka pamilya sa Heneral Santos ang kabilang sa maralitang taga-lunsod. Umasa sa proyektong UDHA (Urban Development Housing Act) at Socialized Housing ang karamihan sa amin, ngunit matapos ang labing-isang taon ay wala pa ring tinatamasang maayos na relokasyon at disenteng pabahay."
The group further said 10,336 urban poor families are living along the danger zones and oftentimes became victims of flashfloods and other disasters.
They particularly cited urban poor families living in Kulasi, Malok, Lower Makar and Roberto in Barangay Labangal; Purok Pearly Shell and Rajah Muda of Bula; and Lower and Upper Puting Bato in Barangay Calumpang.
Altares said their group is set to submit a position paper containing their demands to the City Mayor Wednesday.
The group will also participate in the march-rally organized by militant organizations commemorating the 54th Anniversary of the International Declaration of Human Rights later in the afternoon Wednesday.
