HR violations vs Pinoys blamed on faulty governance
By Merlyn F. Velarde

A FORMER local councilor has attributed the human rights violations against Filipinos to the country's defective structure of governance.

During Wednesday's commemoration of the 55th International Human Rights Day, Dominador Lagare, also a human rights lawyer, said the government structure should be changed so the President could religiously serve the Filipinos, regardless of social status.

He believes that no good qualification of a president would cure ailing Filipinos if the government structure would remain the same.

" At present only three percent of the population controls businesses and politics, this is why when a law is passed, it is always for their favor, not for the poor," he added.

Lagare said the failure of the government to provide Filipinos better living conditions, including livelihood, shelter and other basic needs, constitutes the violation of their human rights.

Lagare said not unless the government provides these requirements, street parliamentarians would always hold protest actions and ask for a change in government.
