Police to go after firecracker dealers
By Edwin G. Espejo

GENERAL Santos City Police Office (GSCPO) director Senior Supt. Jeorge Aquisap on Tuesday said he will continue to enforce a City Hall order banning the sale of firecrackers in the city.

Dealers will be caught, Aquisap said. Although firecrackers are banned, sale of other forms of pyrotechnics, however, is regulated. Pyrotechnic dealers are allowed to sell their merchandise in designated areas identified by the City Government.

Aquisap also said he ordered police to turn over all confiscated firecrackers.
"Mahirap 'yun na hinuhuli pero pulis din ang magpaputok (It won't look good if it were the police who would use these firecrackers on Christmas Eve)," he said.

In the past, residents have spent considerable amount of money for firecrackers and other pyrotechnics to welcome Christmas and New Year.

Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr., however, began banning the sale of firecrackers last year.

However, Aquisap said it is impossible to totally ban the use of firecrackers during New Year's Eve.

Filipinos consider exploding firecrackers on New Year's Eve as way of driving away bad spirits, a tradition taken from Chinese traders who brought the practice in pre-historic Philippines.

Aquisap also warned policemen against firing their government-issued firearms during the holiday season, adding measures have already been instituted to detect lawbreakers.
