5 inmates bolt from Koronadal jail
By Allen V. Estabillo

KORONADAL CITY -- At least five inmates, two of them facing murder charges, bolted from a police detention facility in front of the city police headquarters here early Wednesday.

Superintendent Florendo Quidilla, city police director, identified the escapees as murder suspects Arman Alamada and Romeo Baylosis, and suspected robbers Marvin Cachuela, Arvin Gabayeron and Ricky Beriales.

Beriales, a resident of Davao City was earlier charged with simple theft, was immediately captured at about 6:30 on Wednesday morning at a village in the outskirts of this city.

He is now undergoing tactical interrogation.

Citing initial investigation, Quidilla said the five detainees reportedly sawed off at least two main steel doors of the jail facility.

"They were no longer there when our assigned prison guard conducted a routine inspection at around 2:00 a.m.," Quidilla said.

According to police records, Alamada, a resident of Buluan Maguindanao, is a principal suspect in the killing of a former military man identified as Rudy Fernandez near the public market here two weeks ago.

Alamada was supposed to be transferred to the city jail this afternoon with the scheduled issuance of a commitment order from the Regional Trial Court 25.

Baylosis, a resident of Barangay San Jose here, voluntarily surrendered recently to police over his involvement in a murder case.

Cachuela and Gabayeron, both residents of this city, were charged for the recent robbery of an appliance store collector in a remote village here.

Quidilla, who has already ordered a massive manhunt against the four escapees who are still at-large, admitted that the incident was "big point against them."

Local police have been under fire for the series of unsolved robbery incidents in the city over the last three weeks.

The police official said they are still conducting investigation on the incident. He admitted possible leniency of police officers on duty, which caused the breakout.

The duty desk officer, who was also acting as lockup custodian, was identified as SPO2 Margarito Cabarlo. The police station's officer on duty was Inspector Liza Bagaygay.

Meantime, City Mayor Fernando Miguel ordered police to "exhaust all means to recover the remaining escapees."

The mayor also instructed barangay officials and civilian volunteers to help in the manhunt as he dangled a reward of P30,000 each for the capture of the suspects. He said the reward money would be sourced out from the city's peace and order funds.
