City bags major awards

THE General Santos City Police and Baguio City Police offices were adjudged the best city police units nationwide.

Both police offices garnered the same points during the final selection, besting 45 other police offices nationwide in the selection process.

However, PNP Chief Hermogenes Ebdane chose Baguio when asked to break the tie.

Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. said: "It is the prerogative of the PNP chief. But we must be proud that our city police tied with Baguio City police in terms of points earned. We lost only during the breaking of the tie."

Acharon said the award belied claims made by his political detractors that peace and order condition in the city has deteriorated.

The city police office earlier topped the search for the best city police office in the entire Central Mindanao region.

Meanwhile, the city placed second in the search for cleanest and greenest highly urbanized city nationwide.

Last year, the mayor claimed, the city was only among the finalist.

Now, he said, General Santos landed second next to Olongapo City, which was adjudged the cleanest and greenest city in the country.

The winners in the competition were given plaques during the awarding ceremony held last January 26 in Malacañang Palace.

The mayor cited the vital role played by the city residents in helping the city achieved such an award.

A year after the mayor assumed office, he launched the search for the cleanest and greenest purok in the city in an effort to enhance cleanliness and re-greening of the city.

There was no cash incentive given but Malacañang reportedly pledged to extend more infra supports to the winning local government units to abet them to work extra hard in cleaning and re-greening their respective locality.
