AKBAYAN partylist Representative Mario Aguja warned state universities might be forced to impose tuition fee hike this year because of budgetary constraints.

Aguja, chairman of the committee on technical and higher education of the House of Representatives, said the government is reducing subsidies to state universities to plan of the government aimed at scaling down its big budget deficit.

He said these state-owned colleges and universities would be forced to engage to business activities or raise tuition fees to continue operating.

"Sa ato pa lang nga budget sa 2004 mokabat na sa P864- billion (Our budget for this year is P864 billion). And yet our income is only good for P650 billion," he explained.
