2004 Rajah Buayan awardees named

A SUCCESSFUL businessman noted for his charitable works and a banker who won an international competition in taekwondo are this year's Rajah Buayan awardees.

Named after the ancient Royal House of Rajah Buayan, the award is given to residents who have excelled in their respective fields of endeavors.

Rivera, a former bank manager, ventured into the fishing industry in the mid-80s. Today, he is the president and chief executive officer of the RD Corporation and several other subsidiaries of the company.

Over the years, he has collected a number of awards and citations.

Among these are the 1987 Outstanding Employer Award given by the Office of the City Mayor, the Presidential Award of Excellence for 1987-1988 and 1988-1989 given by the Rotary Club of General Santos City and the Outstanding Countryside Investor of the year 1999 given by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry during its 25th Business Conference. And in 2001 he was conferred honorary consul general of
Papua New Guinea for Mindanao.

He also founded and heads the RD Foundation, an institution that offers scholarship grants to poor students and supports missionary works in the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

Grandeza, on the other hand is a 46-year-old manager of the General Santos City branch of Banco Filipino.

He was a consistent achiever even during his school days.

As an elementary student of Ateneo de Davao Elementary School, he was recognized as the model Boy Scout.

A graduate of Accountancy in Ateneo de Davao University, he was the recipient of the Leadership and the Service Awards.

His community involvement flourished when he actively participated in the Korean Martial Art Training Gym, Inc., especially when he became president in 1990.

It is of this discipline that he earned his highest sports award: the 2001 World Champion in the World Moo Duk Kwan Competition in Miri, Malaysia.

There were 11 nominees in this year's Rajah Buayan Awards for Excellence but the selection committee, selected by the Kalilangan Foundation Inc., decided to hand out the awards to the two most outstanding achievers.

Last, year, the Kalilangan Foundation decided to skip the awards after nine prominent residents and cultural groups were honored as the first batch of awardees in 2002.

The first Rajah Buayan awardees were Bebe-I Gonzales for leadership, Saavedra Saway and Datu Akad Dalid for education, MSU Kabpapagariya Ensemble for cultural and theater arts, Eduardo Martin Leyson VII and Layag Pagari in the filed of music, Girlie royeca in dance, Karim Abad (pencak silat) and Manny Pacquiao (professional boxing) for sports.
