Victims drown while swimming in a pond abandoned by treasure hunters

THE Philippine Coast Guard recovered the dead bodies of two sisters who drowned Sunday noon while swimming in large pond of water allegedly abandoned by treasure hunters between the boundary of Katangawan and Tinagacan.

The bodies of sisters Marjorie and April Mae Maguilan were found five hours after they were reported to have drowned.

Katangawan barangay chair Hermie Herceda said the property where the two young girls went swimming, located in Barangay Tinagacan, is reportedly owned by certain Estocapio.

Herceda said the victims were registered residents of Katangawan, but the area where the incident occurred is not under his jurisdiction since it is part of Tinagacan.

The chairman of the barangay committee on environment also revealed that he did not receive reports of treasure hunting activities in the area.

"Gikalutan daw ni og mina. Karon pa ko nakaari diri ug blind kaayo mi nga duna diay ingon ana diri (Somebody reportedly dug for mines in the area. This is my first time to visit the area; we don't know about
the operation here)," said Barangay Councilman Apolinario Nobleza of Katangawan.

There are reports reaching the barangay that the mining operation is reportedly backed by some police officials in the city.

Herceda said he would initiate an investigation into the diggings to identify who are behind it.

The hole is reportedly 60 feet deep.

Police are still conducting further investigation on the incident.
