Trike drivers rally behind colleagues
THE Transport Integrated for Restructuring Economic Services (Tires) held a picket outside the oil depots of big oil companies in Bula to sympathize with jeepney drivers in various urban centers nationwide who launched a two-hour "tigil pasada" (transportation stoppage) to demand for a hike in the minimum fare.
Tires spokesman Roy Sande said they "strongly support" jeepney operators and drivers nationwide who have been clamoring for at least P1 increase in the minimum fare.
Tires members later held a noise barrage at the public market rotunda.
Sande said the government should immediately act on the Oil Deregulation Act, which they blamed for the unabated oil price increases.
They also demanded the abolition of the specific tax on oil and other petroleum products.
Sande said one of the burdens is the specific tax on pump oil prices where they are paying P4.80 per liter on regular gasoline.
Sande also said they would not hesitate to launch another round of protest if the demands of the drivers will not be met. Merlyn F. Velarde
