Dog sports enthusiasts hold competition By Allen S. Terencio
POLOMOLOK, South Cotabato -- The Pinetown High Drive (PHD) K-9 Sports Club held Sunday a dog competition at the Soccer Field of Lantana Subdivision, Barangay Cannery Site.
Francisco Santos, PHD president said, "We need this competition to check if their (dogs) skills are improving."
Six Belgian Malinois and Labrador Retriever breeds participated in the agility and bomb detection competitions.
Santos said they want to develop Socsargen, specifically General Santos, as a dog sports capital of the Philippines.
"Our main goal is to make Gensan a dog sports capital," Santos said.
He said only Socsargen has organized dog sports club, the Socsargen Kennel Club, Inc., in the entire country at present.
Santos said benefits that could be obtained from this activity are plenty.
"We will be able to develop the skills of dogs for bomb detection, which eventually would be used in fighting terrorism," Santos said.
He said imported trained dogs used by police and military units in bomb detection operations cost millions of pesos.
During the height of bombing in the country the military brought two dogs trained for bomb detection. The dogs reportedly cost P5 million each.
"By training dogs locally, we can minimize the cost of imported trained dogs," Santos explained.
Santos added that they are also planning to include search and rescue skills training in the future.
