GSPMA urged to form coop
MAYOR Pedro Acharon Jr. has urged officers and members of the General Santos Promo Merchandisers Association (GSPMA) to form a cooperative to avail themselves of financial assistance from the City Government.
The group, led by Elmer Flores, held its induction ceremony recently at the RD Plaza. Acharon was invited as guest and inducting officer.
More than a hundred members from various commercial establishments in General Santos and in South Cotabato attended the affair.
The group, with more than 300 members, was formed in the late 90's but had disintegrated after holding its first induction rite.
Flores said it is difficult to sustain the group because most of its members are just casual or contractual employees.
However, Flores said the present set of officers is working hard to strengthen membership of GSPMA.
"There's no other way to better protect and empower yourselves than forming a cooperative. Cooperativism is the real people empowerment," said Thomas Falgui, the group's legal adviser.
The mayor advised the group to visit the City Economic and Cooperative Development Office for information on how to access funds for cooperatives. Aquiles Zonio
