3 more carnappers nabbed
By Allen S. Terencio

AFTER two months of close surveillance, traffic operatives in the region intercepted three suspected carnappers at a checkpoint along national highway in Koronadal City last week.

Supt. Francisco Camorongan, Traffic Management Group (TMG) 12 chief, identified the suspects as Nords Laped, Norodin Kusay and Asmawi Zacaria.

Camorongan said combined elements of South Cotabato Provincial Traffic Management Office and 1204th Provincial Police Mobile Group intercepted the suspects while they were implementing R.A. 6539 (Anti-Carnapping Act of 1972) and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban around 10 a.m. Wednesday in Carpenter Hill, Koronadal city.

Intercepted with the suspects was one unit Yamaha DT motorcycle color black, with motor number 4AR-039327 and chassis number 4AR03927.

The said vehicle, bearing plate number LL-4698, is registered in the name of a certain Asmawi Zacaria, 23, resident of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao.

Verification made in the data fed on the motor vehicle inquiry system revealed that the said motorcycle was carnapped and forcibly taken by unidentified persons from Mar Rosita, a resident of Cabantian, Davao City in Sept. 13, 2001.

The suspects came from General Santos City and were bound for Koronadal City when traffic police flagged them down.

They were immediately brought to the TMG office in Koronadal for interrogation.
"They belong to a certain carnapping group or syndicate because there was a person who introduced himself as a police colonel in Maguindanao who is interceding for their release," Camorongan claimed.

He, however, declined to name the said police colonel.

"Nagtatanong 'yung colonel kung magkano daw kung aming i-release (The colonel is asking how much we are demanding for the release of the suspects)," Camorongan said.

But he said they refused to be swayed by the said police official and continue filing a case against the suspects.

The suspects were charged for violating R.A. 6539 or the Anti-Carnapping Act of 1972 before the office of the prosecutor in Koronadal City.

Camorongan said they also previously arrested two other suspected carnappers.

He identified them as Edgar Marquez and a certain Henry Zaiden.

Camorongan said Marquez is currently detained in Tampakan while Zaiden is out on a P180,000 bail.
