City pound mulled for Koronadal City

KORONADAL CITY -- City officials here are proposing for the establishment of a city pound for various stray animals in a bid to strengthen the government's campaign against the deadly rabies virus.

Reelected councilor Rebecca Bona said she would file a resolution urging Mayor Fernando Miguel to "establish the soonest possible time" a city pound particularly for stray dogs due to the growing cases of rabies infection among local residents, especially children.

"The cases of rabies infection here is really very alarming considering that another child again died just last week," she said.

Bona failed to cite figures regarding the incidence of rabies in the city but the provincial veterinary office earlier placed under close watch several villages in the city where the rabies virus is prevalent.

The Department of Health had sounded alarm over the spread of rabies, a viral disease often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal, due to the growing cases of deaths from rabies infection in various parts of the country.

In her proposed resolution, Bona said he would ask the city's chief executive to place the operations and maintenance of the proposed city pound under the direct supervision of the city veterinary services office.

She also urged the mayor to provide funds for such proposal, particularly for the construction of a city pound building and for its operations and personnel.

Aside from the resolution, Bona said she is also working on a proposed ordinance prescribing the rabies control ordinance in the city of Koronadal and providing penalties for violation.

The main focus of such measure, she said, is the clearing of the city's streets with the stray animals such as "horses, cattle, dogs, cats, pigs, goats, sheep and other four-legged animals and fowl." AVE
