Police seize contraband
By Bobby S. Terencio

ELEMENTS of the General Santos City Police Office (GSCPO) led by Lagao precinct commander Chief Insp. Hermogenes Abril seized alleged contrabands aboard a van Tuesday evening in front of the Lagao police station.

"Around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday. We were able to intercept a van full of imported used television sets from Korea," Abril disclosed.

He said they received a call from city police director Supt. Willie Dangane informing them that a contraband loaded in a white canter van would pass along Lagao.

"We in the Police Precinct No. 3, immediately formed a team to intercept the said truck and we later found out that the information is correct," Abril said.

Police set up checkpoint in crossing Ligaya and flagged down the suspected vehicle, but instead of stopping the driver reportedly sped away.

The police official said they chased the vehicle and were able to catch it in front of the Lagao police station.

He said they immediately summoned an official of the Bureau of Customs to help in the verification of the papers of the seized imported television sets.

Abril revealed that the documents shown to them by the driver of the vehicle was already expired.

"So, it appears that these items have no legal papers."

Based on the documents shown to the authorities, the owner of the seized illegal items was identified as a certain Jennifer Kim.

Abril said Jennifer, who is a resident of Bangkal in Davao City, is said to be the wife a Korean national.

The van bore markings of "URI Marketing," reportedly engaged in the sale of imported used television sets.

When interrogated by the police, the driver of the vehicle said, URI Marketing has branches in the cities of General Santos, Davao, Iligan, Kidapawan, and Koronadal.

In General Santos City, its establishment is located along J. Catolico Street in front of Gaisano mall.

Abril said it is up to the Bureau of Customs to verify the authenticity of the documents of the seized items and to file corresponding case against the owner who might have violated some provisions of the law.

The Mitsubishi Canter van bearing plate number LEY 983 and loaded with 156 used television sets is now impounded at the GSCPO headquarters in Camp Fermin Lira.
