Support gov't peace efforts, Acharon appeals
By Aquiles Zonio

MAYOR Pedro Acharon Jr. urged all sectors to give an all-out support to the ongoing peace endeavor being initiated by the government.

Acharon issued the appeal shortly after the courtesy call made by the officials of both the government and MILF committees on cessation of hostilities together with the nine Malaysian peace observers Tuesday.

The government ceasefire committee was headed by former 601st Army Brigade commander Brig. Gen. Alexander Yano, who is now assigned as deputy division commander of the Army's 9th Infantry Division based in Bicol region.

Yano and his counterpart Benjie Midtimbang were holding a meeting along with the Malaysian visitors regarding the plan to put up ceasefire committee coordinating office in the city.

The mayor said everybody must support the government peace efforts to, once and for all, find a just and long-lasting solution to the Mindanao conflict.

He said allowing armed confrontation to drag on would just worsen the crisis the country is facing. During the war, he added, civilians are the ones most affected.

He emphasized political differences could not be addressed merely by force but also by holding dialogues.
