Cops, military heighten security measures
ALL police and military units in Central Mindanao have been placed in heightened alert following fierce encounters between members of the Philippine Army's 601st Brigade and heavily armed men believed to be elements of the Abu Sayyaf Group in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat last week.
Police Regional Officer (PRO) 12director Chief Supt. Antonio Billones said they have secured the national highways going out of Palimbang and have asked barangay officials and all local government units to assist the police in monitoring the entry of suspicious looking persons or group of strangers in their respective areas.
He said it is probable that members of the Abu Sayyaf Group or its sympathizers will launch attacks in the city to divert the attention of the military who is now conducting hot pursuit operation against remnants of the Abu Sufian that have teamed up with ASG leaders Isnilon Hapilon and Khadaffy Janjalani.
Two weeks ago, five alleged members of the Abu Sufian group led by Beres Binago were slain in an encounter with government soldiers in the hinterlands of Palimbang.
Alo Binago, another leader of the Abu Sufian group tagged by the police here as a local kidnap for ransom gang, was also reportedly killed in a succeeding encounter with the military.
Meanwhile, Joint Task Force Gensan chief Col. Menardo Geslani asked residents and motorists here to bear with the inconveniences of the checkpoints they have established in several entry and exit points around the city.
He said checkpoints also serve as deterrents against infiltrators and members of the said armed groups who are fleeing from the military operations in Palimbang. EGE
