S. Cotabato sets aside P3M for scholarship

THE Provincial Government of South Cotabato has allocated some P3 million for a new scholarship program for indigent secondary and college students that will be opened starting June this year.

South Cotabato Vice Governor Eliordo Ogena said at least 80 students would initially be selected this year for the program, dubbed Kabugwason-Paglaum (Future-Hope) Scholarship Program.

"We intend to provide totally free education for our poor but bright students who have been forced to stay away from school because of poverty," Ogena said.

Last month, South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance-Fuentes issued an executive order that adopted the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the scholarship program.

Under the program, Ogena said the Provincial Government would provide a full scholarship and monthly stipend for selected high school level students who belong to indigent families.

He said full scholarships would also be offered to students who would give honor to the province in any regional, national or international competitions duly sanctioned by the Provincial Government.

For the college level, Ogena said full scholarships with all provisions will be given to qualified scholars belonging to indigent families or those whose families earn a gross annual income of P75,000 to P150,000.

He said the same privilege would also be offered to college students who will bring honor to the province in the regional, national and international competitions. (AVE)
