Catholic Church will carry fight v. mining By Bong S. Sarmiento
KORONADAL CITY -- The Catholic Church will employ Diocesan Social Action Centers (DSACs) to stifle the momentum of mining in the country promoted by the government through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez, chair of the National Secretariat for Social Action-Justice and Peace (Nassa), said they are tapping at least 37 DSACs across the country to strengthen the Catholic Church's stance against mining.
Nassa is the social action arm of the influential Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines.
To boost DSACs role in opposing the government's aggressive promotion of the mining industry, Gutierrez noted that an assembly, dubbed "Ginto't Pilak, Namumulaklak?: DSACs' Response to the Mining Mania," will be held on April 18 to 20 at the Nassa development center in Tagaytay City.
"The convention aims to make participants learn developments in the mining debate and from one another's mining-related experiences, reflect on Catholic social teachings related to ecology, and build consensus on the mining issue," the bishop said.
He added that Nassa would tap experts who will discuss Philippine mining laws and regulations, policy trends, and the effects of mining, especially on indigenous communities.
