City Gov't to acquire more housing sites

THE City Government is planning to develop additional housing and resettlement sites this year to accommodate the close to 2,000 poor families in the city who are homeless.

Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. said the City Government is currently eyeing the opening of some 50 hectares of new resettlement areas, which will be developed under its socialized housing program for the urban poor folks.

As of last month, the mayor said the City Government has officially registered some 13,000 homeless urban poor households coming from its 26 barangays.

Of this number, Acharon said they have identified at least 2,270 families as qualified potential beneficiaries of the socialized housing scheme.

So far, he said the City Government already relocated some 470 families through such program.

"We need 50 hectares more for the 1,800 (homeless families)," Acharon said.

The city's socialized housing program allows poor residents to own a lot and a modest home through affordable mortgage schemes.

It was implemented through assistance from the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the government-owned and controlled National Home Mortgage Finance Corp. and other non-government and people's organizations.

Through the National Housing Authority and the Office of South Cotabato first district Representative Darlene Antonino-Custodio, he said a two-hectare resettlement area would soon be opened in Barangay Calumpang.
