City police chief relieved from post By Edwin G. Espejo
CONTROVERSIAL police superintendent Willie Danange was relieved from his post as head of the General Santos City Police Office (GSCPO) last week, days after his name was dragged in the murder of a lady columnist who was shot by unidentified gunmen on Maundy Thursday.
Police Regional Office (PRO) 12 Director Antonio Billones, however, quickly said Dangane's relief has nothing to do with the slaying of Marlene Esperat.
Billones failed to disclose what is Dangane's new assignment, though.
The police regional director earlier said Dangane was already due for relief because of his rank.
Dangane assumed as acting city police on April 2 last year. Two days before he was replaced, Dangane held a press conference to deny any involvement in the slaying of Esperat.
He however admitted the slain lady columnist had filed an administrative case against him over his alleged failure to serve an arrest warrant issued to a close friend of a defeated member of the House of Representatives in Sultan Kudarat.
At the time of Esperat's death, she also had pending graft complaint against the politician.
The latest issue against Dangane is just one of the several controversial cases filed against him.
Two years ago, then PRO 11 Director Eduardo Matillano filed a kidnapping case against Dangane for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of the daughter of a car dealer in Davao City.
During his almost one year stint with the GSCPO, Dangane arrested several notorious crime suspects but was also accused of arbitrarily arresting some innocent civilians.
During his term as acting city police chief, two bombing attacks and two other foiled arson tries were recorded in the city.
Dangane was replaced by Senior Superintendent Alfredo Toroctocon, a little known senior police official who is well known in the intelligence community.
Toroctocon, according to a Sun.Star source, was one of the police and military officials who arrested several key members of the Al-Harakatul Islamiya, the pre-cursor of the Abu Sayyaf Group in the city, in the early 90's.
