Sluice mining banned in Tampakan
By Bong S. Sarmiento

KORONADAL CITY -- The Provincial Government of South Cotabato has issued a closure order on banlas (sluice) mining activities now taking place also in Tampakan town, where an Australian-backed firm is also developing a large-scale mining venture.

Lourdes Jumilla, head of secretariat of the Provincial Mining and Regulatory Board (PMRB), said Tuesday the closure order against banlas mining in Barangay Pulabato, Tampakan was approved on March 14, or more than two weeks ago.

"The closure order was based on the investigation report submitted to the Provincial Government by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, confirming the existence of banlas mining there," she said.

Jumilla said they would visit the area in the coming days to monitor the compliance of the order by banlas workers, as they have not yet gone to the village last week due to the Holy Week break.

Last month, the Provincial Government also banned banlas mining in T'boli town, ordering the police to confiscate equipment used by the miners.

However, reports as of this writing said the activity still persists there.
