Agri dep't releases P1.37M to Sarangani coast towns

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) released a loan grant of P1.377 million to fund an agriculture-based livelihood project of at least 11 marginalized community organizations in Sarangani province.

Nasser Mudin, Region 12 coordinator of the DA-supported regional agriculture and fisheries council, said the funds will mainly be used as seed capital for community-based goat- raising ventures in the coastal towns of Alabel, Kiamba and Glan in Sarangani.

He said the beneficiaries are composed of members of 11 rural-based organizations, particularly rural improvement clubs for women and 4-H clubs.

"We'll be hitting two birds in one shot here because the beneficiaries are not only farmers but most of them are Lumads or indigenous peoples," he said at the weekly radio program "Unlad Ani" of DA region 12.

Mudin said the loan grants were sourced from the second phase of DA's Livelihood Enhancement for Agricultural Development or Lead program, which is funded mainly by the United States government though Public Law 480.

According to a DA program briefer, the Lead program was launched in 1988 by then Agriculture Sec. Carlos Dominguez "to speed up farmers' organizations access to financing, management expertise, and marketing. (Allen V. Estabillo)
