Sarangani guv asks academe: Bridge gap to farmers
MALUNGON, Sarangani -- Governor Migs Dominguez on Sunday called on the academe and agricultural institutions to "bridge the gap" with farmers as he announced the deployment of more extension workers in Sarangani.
"Next year you can expect more (agricultural) extension workers around the whole province to help farmers improve farming through new technology," the governor said during the "Adlaw sa Uma" (farmers' day) in Barangay Kinabalan learning site.
Dominguez directed the provincial agriculture office: "We want to see a battalion of extension workers."
"We have to make sure that we bridge the gap between institutions and colleges down to the farmers para mahimong mga scientists na ang atong mag-uuma," the governor said. "Make the farmers more scientific and more productive."
However, the governor reminded the farmers: "Kung naa mi ikahatag naa unta mo'y ikahatag balik. Murag tong example nako sa una, kung ako motimpla sa inyong kape, magdala sab mo'g tinapay para naa ta'y counterparting."
Dominguez also expressed the province's hope for progress in the hands of the farmers with government providing farm-to-market roads and farm inputs.
The governor issued the statements as the Upland Development Programme opened Thursday the Kinabalan farmers' learning site for market matching sessions, farmer-producers and traders or buyers met to determine potential marketing tie-ups.
The Kinabalan learning site serves as training ground for farmers, agricultural technicians and other interested stakeholders. It is also the site where new technologies are tested or demonstrated.
Adlaw sa Uma was attended by Wiebe Van Rij, UDP co-director, farmers' training groups, agricultural technicians and local officials.
The event featured field tours and farm clinic on the latest technology in agriculture and farming.
"This is one of the agricultural innovations we have, perhaps first in the world like the field tour and farm clinic," said Alexander Tabbada, project team leader of International Center for Research in Agro Forestry.
"This is to enhance the agricultural extensions initiated by the UDP through technological transfer as our prime mechanism in order to reach upland farmers here at the farmers learning site," Tabbada added.
UDP is a program of the Department of Agriculture supported by the European Union for the sustainable agriculture in upland areas and for environmental protection. (Sarangani Information Office)
