Jun lauds boxing tourney
THE Palarong Boxing Alang sa Kabataan (PBA sa Kabataan) amateur boxing weekly inter-barangay tournament successfully kicked off at the Oval Plaza covered court here Sunday, August 14 with local pugilists seeing action in 12 initial bouts.
City Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr., whose office provided the initial funding for the tournament, attended the launching and encouraged the local chapter of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) to sustain the project in order develop world-class amateur boxers in the city.
He expressed hope that the resumption of the Boxing-at-the-Park under the new name PBA sa Kabataan would provide new impetus for amateur boxing in this part of the country.
The hizzoner lauded the joint efforts of ABAP Gensan, the City Youth and Sports Development Board, the SouthPhil Arts and Sports Promotion, and DXBB Super Radyo Gensan-GMA to revive the famous Boxing-at-the-Park where Filipino boxing idol Manny Pacquiao started as an amateur.
Despite the scheduled power service interruption and the sudden death of Dennisa Gubaton, wife of City Boxing Coordinator Osorio Gubaton, the launching went on smoothly, with about 500 people including Maasim Mayor Anecito "Jojo" Lopez, Jr. and Maitum Kagawad Edwin Ramos witnessing the opening bouts.
ABAP Gensan Chapter President Adriano "Rey" Golingan personally supervised the event, while City Sports Coordinator Ernesto Nanali closely monitored the results of each bout.
Meantime, ABAP conducted a four-day boxing officiating training seminar for about 30 DepEd referee-judges and some volunteers from the city's 26 barangay from August 17 to 20 at the Family Country Hotel and Convention Center here.
Ramon Vicente, ABAP national referee-judge and commissioner for SOCSARGEN, and Celestino Rebamonte, also a national referee-judge based in Panabo, Davao del Norte, conducted the training under the supervision of ABAP Secretary-General Roger Fortaleza who flew in from Manila.
The training has been designed to upgrade the knowledge and skills of existing local referee-judges and to develop prospective referee-judges.
Some of the trainees would be fielded as assistant referees during the 2005 Tunafest Bakbakan sa Gensan Open Amateur Boxing Championship from September 2 to 5. (Arthur J. Tariman)
