Youth asked to foster peace in Mindanao
THE National Youth Commission (NYC) challenged the youth sector in Mindanao to take a more active role in fostering peace in the island.
Just recently, the NYC called various youth representatives from all over Mindanao to a conference in Davao City to highlight their role in addressing Mindanao Problem.
The theme "Building Peace Through Youth Empowerment" was not only relevant, it also served as a big challenge to the participants to work hard in building peace communities particularly in strife-torn areas in Mindanao.
More than 50 participants from the Muslim, Christian and Lumad sectors participated in the confab dubbed "Kabataan sa Mindanao Natin Convergence."
The conference was organized by the NYC in coordination with the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA), Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Office of Muslim Affairs (Omar), National Commission for Indigenous People (NCIP) and Office of the Presidential Affairs for Peace Process (Opapp).
The initiative of gathering youth leaders from across Mindanao was part of President Arroyo's Mindanao National Initiatives (Mindanao Natin).
Paolo Benigno A. Aquino IV, chair and chief executive officer of NYC, urged the youth sector to live up to its billing "Hope of thy Motherland."
Aquino said peace and radical change could be attained in Mindanao with the active participation of the youth sector.
Youth, he said, should help chart the destiny of Mindanao from being the "Land of Promise" to a "Land of Peace and Fulfillment." (AZ)
