Food agency to start palay procurement
KORONADAL CITY -- The National Food Authority (NFA) office in Central Mindanao will begin next month its a renewed intensified palay procurement drive as it moves to beef up local rice stocks.
Ernesto Macasinag, NFA Region 12 director, said they are preparing the opening of additional palay buying stations in various parts of the region in anticipation of the start of the palay harvest season this month September.
"We allocated an initial funding of P7 million for such purpose but it would be increased later when the procurement would begin," he told reporters.
The NFA Region 12 covers the cities of Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan, Cotabato and the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato.
Macasinag said the funding allocations depend on the targets submitted by the NFA provincial offices.
The NFA is currently buying palay at P10 per kilogram from both individual farmers and members of farmers' organizations or cooperatives.
The grains agency had increased its palay buying price to P10 effective for the entire year in response to the growing clamor of farmers for the government to help increase their income from their production efforts. (Allen V. Estabillo)
