S. Cotabato gets P16M grant from New Zealand for ecotourism
THE tourism industry in South Cotabato gets an added boost as New Zealand government pledged to grant US$300,000 (about P16.8 million) to develop the potential of Lake Sebu, a hinterland town dubbed as the summer capital of Central Mindanao.
Lake Sebu Mayor Basilo Salif disclosed that among the ecotourism sites to be developed are Traankini spring in Barangay Lamhalak, the Seven Falls along Lenon River, and the town's various lakes like Sebu, Lahit and Seloton.
Salif said the development work for the areas covered would start by October.
"The fund would be a big help for us to achieve efforts to promote the locality as the premier ecotourism hub in Central Mindanao," Salif told local reporters.
The mayor said the fund would cover three years of work to develop various natural spots in the said areas.
The Lake Sebu ecotourism project is one of the seven potential destinations in Mindanao that is being funded by New Zealand.
A technical team had already arrived in Lake Sebu to evaluate the areas that would be covered by the project.
Lake Sebu was chosen as an ecotourism project site during the National Ecotourism Forum in May 2004 held in Rembrandt hotel in Quezon City attended by top Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Department of Tourism officials. (RBS)
