Ateneo to play in Australia

SINGAPORE Tri-Junior Basketball Tournament champion Ateneo de Davao High School is gearing up for the 2005 Pacific School Games on November 26 to December 4 in Melbourne, Australia.

The Ateneans tasted their first international exposure in September last year as the smallest and youngest squad to compete in the 8th Asean Schools Basketball Championship won by host Thailand.

But in March this year, the Jr. Blue Knights swept all their three games by beating the St. Andrew's Jr. College, the Singapore National Under-15 squad and the Singapore Combined Schools.

In late November, the team will now be led by team captain and former Gaisano South Cup most valuable player Milton Condevillamar, who is expected to steer his team again in offense.

But tough games are ahead for Condevillamar and his teammates since they will be joining the tournament with confirmed entries from Canada, China, East Timor, Fiji, French Polynesia, Malaysia, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) 11 regional director Regino "Boy" Cua said the parents of the players and Ateneo officials have already met and agreed to go overseas for another international basketball exposure.

Cua said Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William "Butch" Ramirez is facilitating their participation to the Games, considered as the "biggest student games" in the world.

The team is scheduled to leave on Nov. 24 for the players to get the needed rest and practice sessions.

The opening ceremony will be held at the Optus Oval or the Princes Park where close to 30,000 spectators, athletes, officials and entertainer will converge for the rites.
