Coops to get more government support
KORONADAL CITY -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo vowed to strengthen the country's cooperatives, which she cited as one of the emerging anchors of the government's continuing efforts to bring full development to the countryside.
Speaking before delegates of the 6th Region 12 Cooperative Summit recently held here, the President said her administration would continue to push for initiatives that would help build up the cooperative sector, especially those based in southern and central Mindanao.
"The cooperative movement plays a significant role in our continuing war against poverty. My administration supports the principle of further strengthening the spirit of the cooperatives," Arroyo said.
The President stressed that such efforts would not focus on the creation of more cooperatives but by luring every individual, especially those in the rural areas, to become members of cooperatives.
Arroyo said the government would work for the institutionalization of the cooperatives as catalysts for change and the empowerment of the ordinary citizens.
To realize this, the President said she has instructed the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) to help address the needs of the operational cooperatives in a bid to make their operations more stable.
"Numerous cooperatives were created in the past but many of them became extinct. Now we will weeding out the non-operational cooperatives and make those which are existing more stronger," the President said.
In Region 12, the CDA earlier cited that only 60 percent of the region's 4,612 cooperatives are currently operational. The remaining 40 percent have either totally stooped operating or undergoing rehabilitation.
The cooperatives in the region are mostly engaged in agriculture and forestry, credit and financing, transport and services. (Allen V. Estabillo)
