More palay, corn seeds distributed

THE Provincial Government of South Cotabato has distributed some 6,270 bags of palay and corn seeds to local farmers who were affected by the previous drought and other calamities that hit the province over the last few months.

Reynaldo Legaste, provincial agriculture officer, said the seed distribution scheme is part of the ongoing certified palay seeds and hybrid corn seeds calamity assistance program of the local government.

Legaste said the Provincial Government earlier appropriated some P1.9 million for the purchase of certified palay seeds and P1.52 million for the hybrid corn seeds.

The funds were sourced from the province's calamity funds.

The distribution and allocation scheme, which covered farmers from the province's 10 towns and lone city, was based on the reported extent of damage wrought by various calamities to corn and palay crops.

For palay, Tantangan town, which was one of the areas hit hardest by the drought, received some 1,120 bags. Sto. Niño and Norala towns came in next with 950 bags each, Banga and Surallah with 775 each, Lake Sebu with 350, Koronadal City with 80, T'boli, Polomolok and Tupi with 40 apiece and Tampakan with 30 bags.

For corn, T'boli got the biggest allocation with 300 bags followed by Banga and Surallah with 240 each, Polomolok with 225, Lake Sebu and Tampakan with 100 each, Tantangan with 85, Tupi, Sto. Niño and Norala with 75 each and Koronadal with 40.

Legaste said the certified palay seeds were sourced from at least two accredited seed producers in the province, the Binhian sa Timog Kutabato or Bintiku and the South Cotabato Seed Producers Cooperative or Socosepco.

Based on a memorandum of agreement it earlier forged with the provincial government, Bintiku supplied some 2,115 bags while Socosepco delivered 2,635 bags, Legaste said.

Meanwhile, Legaste added the hybrid corn seeds were sourced from various accredited producers and distributors in the area.

Aside from the seed distribution, the provincial agriculture office also provided technical assistance on various recommended technologies to ensure high yields to the farmer-beneficiaries. (Allen V. Estabillo)
