State of calamity mulled in S. Cotabato

KORONADAL CITY -- Heavy rains and continuous flooding is prompting South Cotabato officials to declare the province under a state of calamity.

Reports said up to P64-million worth of infrastructure were already destroyed as a result of the situation.

Provincial engineer Bernard Dormitorio, chair of the province's Task Force La Niña, said the floods destroyed several bridges, roads, irrigation canals, and water supply facilities in at least eight towns of the province.

Dormitorio said the damage to bridges and roads were placed at P48 million while the destroyed irrigation canals and water supply facilities were estimated at P16 million.

Among those hit hardest were roads in the upland areas and bridges located at the major rivers and their tributaries.

Dormitorio said Koronadal City and the municipalities of Banga, Norala, Polomolok, Sto. Niño, T'boli, Tampakan and Tupi have already declared a state of calamity as a result of the floods.

"Right now we are trying to repair and rehabilitate these damaged infrastructure using our regular budget but we need some augmentation through our calamity funds," Dormitorio said.

Based on a report prepared by the Task Force, Dormitorio claimed at least P37.8 million are needed for the immediate repairs and rehabilitation of the damaged roads and bridges.

Vice Governor Eliordo Ogena said they are currently studying the possibility of declaring the province under the state of calamity.

"That is a possibility but right now we are still gathering the needed information and reports about this matter," Ogeno said adding that they are also waiting for an official recommendation from the executive department regarding the proposed declaration. (Allen V. Estabillo)
